I just found this lovely gem. It’s a direct quote from Sony Computer Entertainment head Ken Kutaragi concerning the price of the PS3:

“This is the PS3 price. Expensive, cheap — we don’t want you to think of it in terms of game machines. Because the PS3 is like nothing else.

For instance, is it not nonsense to compare the charge for dinner at the company cafeteria with dinner at a fine restaurant? It’s a question of what you can do with that game machine. If you can have an amazing experience, we believe price is not a problem.

When we announced the PlayStation price, it was said to be expensive. Same for the PlayStation 2. However, when released, both had sales that were unthinkable for previous game machines. This is because both offered experiences that could not be had on previous game machines.

With the PS3, you can have next generation game experiences that could previously not be experienced — things like next generation graphics and various services via the network. And, as with the PS and PS2, we believe people who like games will, without question, purchase it.”

What world are you living in? Yes, people bought your systems. Eventually. When you basically had more games than anyone else. But how can you possibly think that for this coming Christmas season, the biggest selling time of the year? Microsoft will have a good number of games out by that time (several already look like good next-gen games), and the Nintendo Wii (Revolution) will be releasing about that time, too. And even though I’ve not been too hot for the Wii, you know the price point Nintendo has been throwing around? From all that I’ve heard, they are going to try and get the console to market for around $200.

Now, if you’re a money conscious parent I don’t see you blowing $600+ on a new system for your child, and even if you’re a die hard gamer I don’t see you easily dropping $600+ when you can get next-gen for cheaper. With regards to the XBox 360, you know what some of my die hard gaming friends said? “I could by a computer for that much”. You think they’re going to change their tone for a higher priced system? For the cost of the PS3 you could buy a new computer, easily.

And Ken, you really need to think about what you’re saying first. When the PS1 and PS2 came out before, the main competition was the N64 and the Dreamcast respectively. For both of those times the difference between the systems was substantial. But now? You’ll be releasing during a time that your system will be super expensive and not really that much better. I admit, you may hit the die hard elitist market of gamers who will eat ramen for a month in order to brag about having the latest and greatest, but I think this time you made a big mistake. You might have been OK if the system launched when it was supposed to back in March, but you’ve missed it.

Look behind you, Ken. I think I see Nintendo waving their Wii at you…..
